It has great prospectus as you have described. Authors must be empowered to get what they really deserve out of there creations. Might not as the extent to Rowling's. But there is a hope.

Fascinating. I love the idea that the power and control over the work belongs with its creator, and I'm all for choice for the consumer (to a point--too much choice becomes paralyzing). Fortunately, Rowling no longer needs the marketing afforded by a good book publisher. I'm not sure that will ever be true of the majority of writers--particularly young writers. I know the web has made it possible for individuals to market themselves and now everyone can have a voice, but as the sea of voices grows deeper it becomes harder and harder to be heard. If one is gifted to write great books, will he also be gifted enough to get his words out to those of us who want to read those great books. I'm not sure. Would Rowling ever have surfaced to the top without Scholastic? Will the gifted young writers in my classroom be able to do so. Much to consider here.

If this rambled, sorry. I got distracted mid-thought.

Thanks for this informative article. I don't think Google have got it right when it comes to searching for blogs. Some of the blogs that come up are full of ads and clearly part of a blogging network for SEO and some are just domain names. They need to improve the search. Blog directories are also a good way of finding blogs.

If the digital price is significantly less than the hard copy price, I don't think there should be an automatic right to lend it like a hard copy. That said lending IMHO is likely to have only a net positive effect on sales overall.

That's awesome. I've taught HTML to high school students reading at a 5th grade level and they did surprisingly well. I didn't know what to expect at the time as I was only in my second year teaching.
I think I will probably start with Scratch with the kids next year if I get approval. Right now, I'm trying to learn to program iOS apps. I like your site.

"Is it worthwhile to teach programming to middle school students?"
YES! I've used NetLogo, Scratch, Alice and good old HTML. The kids love it, especially when given the freedom to experiment and try out their own code. I've blogged about my experiences @ http://tmblr.co/ZO7aexBlFckB and collect resource @ http://techkim.wikispaces.com. I want to give Python a try next (I'm brushing up my skills by taking Udacity's CS 101 - which I think would also be great for kids who show a real interest).
