Edible Book Contest

This morning, many talented students made food representations of their favorite books. Here are some of the entries. We’re going to vote on winners, have a party, and eat them all after school today. I’m very proud of and impressed by the students.

Update

We had about 80 kids stay after school. The kids were really excited to support their friends and try the cake. Almost everyone made some variation of cake. I want to say thank you to all the kids who participated.

The student winner is the amazingly talented Jasmine K. Here is her wining entry from Clifford the Big Red Dog. She won despite making two outstanding entries (she also did the Cars one) and having votes split between her two masterpieces.

The teacher winner is Ms. Willis, who teaches freshman math. She actually made the made book, specifically the quadratic equation.

Wow, your students are such culinary artists! What an awesome idea and engagement for the love of reading!

Thanks Katy. I’ll let the kids know.

    Hi Jason!

I just had to say that I was blown away by the Wild Things cake. Too Cute!

May I ask, was this Optional/ Mandatory? Was there a curricular connection (Understand and represent major ideas of a novel, for example)? Are they being evaluated or is it just for fun and sharing of books they like?

I really like this idea as a way to engage parents with their kids talking about the books they love and how to represent them. This would be a great idea for a family literacy night.

    Thanks for sharing,
    Katy

    Katy,
It is national library month, so we’re doing the event to raise awareness about the library. It was optional, although we are giving away mall gift cards to both the winning student and teacher group. Could be a fun family night too.

Wow! Super cool and fun! How much time did students have to create these?

I like the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” representation.

I think this could be a interesting Open House activity…

I like that it is labeled as “Food Representation” that way it is open to whatever the story has to offer…I am thinking about “Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie”…

In addition, very good way to get students thinking metaphorically!

I would love to see the directions for the assignment, too!

    Thanks Steve.
There weren’t too many directions actually. We just told the students that to participate, they had to create a food item (Most did cake, but that wasn’t strictly necessary. I’ve seen people do quiche and other items in examples online.) that represented a book. The book could be child, young adult, or adult; whatever they wanted.
In terms of representation, we left it open to the kids. They could mimic the cover or a part of the cover that stands out. They could create a recurring or important image from the book. Mostly we wanted to let the kids run with it. If I’m still a librarian next year, I think you’re right and it would be fun to do on parent/teacher conferences or open house.
